PEARLS More than SHANGHAI
An original musical by Link Martin (book/lyrics) and Scrumbly Koldewyn (music), PEARLS Over SHANGHAI is the centerpiece of Thrillpeddlers' 2nd annual Theatre of the Ridiculous Revival, and marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of The Cockettes, a gender-bending theatrical troupe who not only originated this show, but exerted a profound influence on the culture of our times, from the phenomenon of midnight movies to glitter rock stars (such as David Bowie and the New York Dolls) and their outrageous fashions. PEARLS is a psychedelic musical inspired bysin-soaked Old Shanghai and Busby Berkeley movie musicals from Hollywood's Golden Age.

They Laughed When I Sat Down at the Piano -- but When I Started to Play --

Remember the old ad that utilized to run endlessly in magazines and newspapers:

"They laughed when I sat down at the piano...but when I began to play..." ?

I keep in mind very effectively the first time I played piano for any group. They DID laugh. It was a disaster. I overheard the leader say "Let's get somebody with some rhythm in there to play."

Ouch!

That hurt. But I told myself right then and there that I would find out to play the piano so well that nobody would ever laugh at me again.

Guess what?

Nobody laughs anymore. And they don't laugh at my students, either.

Why?

Due to the fact I found...

-- The BACKDOOR to piano playing --

What inside the globe may be the "backdoor to piano playing?"

Chords.

Chords are a way in to the globe of piano playing with no having to go through the front door: years and years of scales, drills, rote practicing, etc. Chords are really a shortcut to understanding and playing music with out each of the formal instruction.

Formal coaching is fine for those who have the money and time. But most adults don't need to wait forever ahead of they can play anything enjoyable on the piano. I took lessons when I was a kid, but identified it boring. Not merely that, but all I could do was play the written music precisely because it was written. Without the sheet music in front of me, I didn't have a clue what to accomplish. So I lost interest in piano playing till the incident described above. But shortly right after that, I had the chance to play in a college combo -- but to do that, I had to learn chords, and find out them rapidly.

I did not actually know where to turn, so I sent to get a $2. chord chart advertised in Popular Mechanics, and within hours soon after I got it I was playing the Dm7 chord as well as the C6 chord in my left hand whilst I played the tune with my correct hand. Talk about excited! Inside a number of weeks I could play dozens of songs using chords. And I found that my sight-reading speed greatly enhanced simultaneously, because now I understood what I was seeing around the printed web page!

So I came in through the back door alternatively, and now I get pleasure from what I employed to hate! Why? Because I understand what I'm carrying out due to the fact now I comprehend chords and chord progressions. I sooner or later went on to get sophisticated degrees in music and literature from Southern Oregon University -- and it was easy because of all I had learned about music theory and harmony on account of playing and understanding chords.

Can you do exactly the same?

There's really no cause why you cannot in case you have the want. Start looking at sheet music with new eyes: appear for notes that make up chords and after that analyze those chords. Prior to extended you will commence seeing a pattern of recurring chords; in other words, chord progressions. Do that to get a handful of months even though simultaneously studying about chords and how they may be formed, and music will take on a new dimension for you. You will no longer view sheet music as some thing you might be tied to, but rather you are going to see it as a map which you can adhere to to create the sounds and styles you choose.
